Applied Fluid Mechanics Lab Manual Final Report: Incorporating an Open Educational Resource into the Applied Fluid Mechanics Laboratory Course to Enhance Civil Engineering Education
Habib Ahmari
In this project an open educational resource (OER) was developed and incorporated into the applied fluid mechanics laboratory course. The objectives of this OER were to: 1) provide students with adequate and consistent educational resources, 2) assess the benefits of utilizing free and open course material to enhance engineering students' technical skills and engagement, and 3) reduce the financial barriers to engineering education. The applied fluid mechanics laboratory course is an essential component of water resources engineering programs, but it is challenging to find standard course materials that help students comprehend and connect with experimental procedures. The OER allows all engineering students to benefit from free, perpetual access to the course content in the forms of customized lab manuals, educational videos, and an interactive lab report preparation toolkit, which eliminated the need for dedicated textbooks. A web-based multimedia e-book was created on Pressbooks, and it is publicly available to students and educators in other universities. The OER was implemented in fall 2018 at the University of Texas at Arlington. The students' learning experiences and the effectiveness of course materials were gauged by circulating survey forms to the students enrolled in the course at the end of 2018 spring (traditional lab) and fall 2018 (open educational resource) semesters. Data related to some control variables were collected for the purpose of performing a statistical analysis. Students' grades for lab reports, quizzes, and the final exam were also compared. The statistical analysis showed that the grades of the students who used the OER as reference material were higher than those of the students who had the same instructor the previous semester but were taught using traditional teaching materials. Teaching with OER also reduced the amount of time spent by students on the course, which indirectly reduced the cost of their education. The results of this study signify the effectiveness of the OER in enhancing engineering education.

Creating Online Learning Experiences: A Brief Guide to Online Courses, from Small and Private to Massive and Open
Matt Crosslin
The process of designing online courses often focuses on the methodology of taking certain steps to produce a product (the course). We feel that learning should be an experience more than a place run by a person constrained by specific designs. The goal of this book is to provide an updated look at many of the issues that comprise the online learning experience creation process. As online learning evolves, the lines and distinctions between the various classifications of courses has blurred and often vanished. Learning contexts run the gamut from small to massive, and from closed courses to boundary-less experiences. But how do we create something within this incredibly wide range? Classic elements of instructional design remain relevant at the same time that newer concepts of learning experience are growing in importance. However, problematic issues new and old still have to be addressed. This book aims to be a handbook that explores as many of these issues and concepts as possible for new and experienced designers alike, whether you are creating traditional online courses, open learning experiences, or anything in between. We also desire this book to be an ongoing process. Many issues and contexts were covered, many were not covered in enough depth, and many others were not covered at all. Our desire is that this book will begin a conversation that will add to future editions as more people join the writing team. Final Report: Development of Web-Based Interactive Educational System Replacing the Traditional Textbook Based Instructional Approach
Sharareh Kermanshachi
Dr. Sharareh Kermanshachi, Assistant Professor in UTA's Department of Civil Engineering, received a UTA CARES grant in 2017. The grant supported creation of an OER to replace the commercial textbook previously used in a graduate-level civil engineering course on risk management. The course has an average enrollment of 45 students in each of the fall and spring semesters and 15 in the summer semesters. The grantee-provided cost savings estimate was approximately $11,550 in annual savings. The OER was first used in Civil Engineering 5350 in Fall 2017. Twelve engineering students and 37 management students voluntarily participated in an end-of-semester survey during the pilot semester. An analysis of survey results and student grades suggested the following: 1. Engineering students enrolled in the risk management course had a more positive perception towards the OER than non-engineering students. 2. Students with loans had a more positive perception of the OER compared to students without loans. 3. The academic performance of the students utilizing OER, based on the grades of their assignments, exams, and course projects, was better than that of the students using traditional textbooks.

Introduction to Archaeology: A Workbook Final Report
Ashley Lemke
Over time students enrolled in ANTH 2339: Introduction to Archaeology have informally commented on the required course materials, often citing the expense of the book particularly coupled with the expenses of all the books students needed to buy for all their classes each semester. Even when using an older edition textbook to reduce cost, it became clear that most students in the course were not purchasing the textbook. In Summer 2019, the course was approved for the Core Curriculum at UTA. Introduction to Archaeology now fulfills a Social and Behavioral Sciences requirement for all UTA students. Its adoption into the Core Curriculum has increased enrollment, and in turn lead to an even greater need for affordable resources. A UTA CARES grant application was funded in 2019 to support use of OER in this course. This final report details challenges and accomplishments of the project.
