Description
Dr. Sharareh Kermanshachi, Assistant Professor in UTA's Department of Civil Engineering, received a UTA CARES grant in 2017. The grant supported creation of an OER to replace the commercial textbook previously used in a graduate-level civil engineering course on risk management. The course has an average enrollment of 45 students in each of the fall and spring semesters and 15 in the summer semesters. The grantee-provided cost savings estimate was approximately $11,550 in annual savings. The OER was first used in Civil Engineering 5350 in Fall 2017. Twelve engineering students and 37 management students voluntarily participated in an end-of-semester survey during the pilot semester. An analysis of survey results and student grades suggested the following: 1. Engineering students enrolled in the risk management course had a more positive perception towards the OER than non-engineering students. 2. Students with loans had a more positive perception of the OER compared to students without loans. 3. The academic performance of the students utilizing OER, based on the grades of their assignments, exams, and course projects, was better than that of the students using traditional textbooks.
