Description

Uncolored map of northwestern African coast. First map in set of four; double-paged, single-sided, horizontal. Bound on verso. When the map was issued around 1825, European knowledge of Africa was still quite limited. While the coastal outline of the continent was well understood, and in some cases scientifically mapped, the map shows that much of the interior remained unknown. Surrounding areas of Barbary, Algiers, Morocco, Fez, and surrounding islands of mainland Africa are included. Boundary lines of regions are distinguished by color. Hachures are used to indicate coast(s). Travel routes within Sahara are mapped to get through and/or from into surrounding regions. Landforms located throughout. Border around map includes scale. No key provided for colored outline regions. Publisher information noted at bottom margin of page. 89 cm. x 75 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
