Description

Johann Matthias Haas's revision of J.B. Homann's 1715 map of Africa, augmented to include important cartographic developments as recorded by Guillaume Delisle and D'Anville. Colored map presented fairly accurately, without most fictitious lakes/rivers of previous cartography, focusing on the known coastal regions of the continent. Interior is left blank or marked as "Terra Incognito." Detailed place names are more apparent within northern, western, and southern coasts. Egypt, Nubia, and Abyssinia regions are shown as distinct entities. Lake Nyasa is shown as Lac Marawi. The Dutch settlements of Castell Batov and Stellenbosch are shown at the Cape. Neighboring regions of southern Europe, Arabia, and Persia included with detail. Large and colorful title cartouche, located in bottom left, is framed with elephant tusks and supported by a serpent resting above a masonry tablet, with Latin text. Scene below title cartouche features natives, negotiating with European foreigners, surrounded by indigenous animals. Background includes view of Table Bay and Table Mountain. Additional Latin text provided throughout map as supplemental context. Locale of various tribes noted. Landforms and waterways located throughout. Border surrounding map includes scale. Scale key not provided. Hachures depicted off coast(s). Double-paged, single-sided, horizontal map on laid paper. Without binding. Centrefold as issued. 46 cm. x 55 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
