Description

Lightly colored map of Africa prepared by Güssefeld, based on earlier work done by Sayer and Rennel. The known lands, most explored by missionaries and early colonists, of Mediterranean Africa, Egypt, Abyssinia, Morocco, the Niger Delta, and South Africa and the Congo, are mapped according to standard conventions of the time. Various areas of continent are delineated by colored outlines and shading. Very few landforms and waterways depicted, with some travel routes. Across the center of the continent are the mythical 'Mountains of the Moon,' first populated by Ptolemy. Today, it is generally agreed that references to the Mountains of the Moon refer to the Ruwenzori Range of Kenya and Uganda. Title and scale key located in lower left. Title accompanied beneath with German text and date mention,"1791". Surrounding border of print includes scale. The scale key in lower left displays six different mileage scales: German, Nautical, English, French, Portuguese and “Day’s Journey by Caravan.” Hachures depicted off coast(s). This map shows Africa just prior to the wave of European exploration into it's unique and vast interior. Map features names of various tribal groups and indigenous empires/kingdoms throughout. Neighboring regions of Arabia, southern Mediterranean, Persia, Anatolia, and Levant included. Double-paged, single-sided, horizontal map. Bound at centrefold on verso. 46 cm. x 52 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
