Description
Uncolored map of southern Africa as being explored by the Dutch and British expeditions. Fourth map in set of four; double-paged, single-sided, horizontal. When the map was issued around 1825, European knowledge of Africa was still quite limited. While the coastal outline of the continent was well understood, and in some cases scientifically mapped, the map shows that much of the interior remained unknown. Madagascar and surrounding islands of mainland Africa included. Border around map includes scale. Known regions delineated with color. No key provided. Hachures depicted off coast(s). Landforms located throughout southern region. Notes included throughout map describe terrain, climate, and seasonal patterns. Publisher information located at bottom center of map. 89 cm. x 75 cm.
