Description
Colorful map of Egypt, published in Nuremberg for the atlas "Descriptio Orbis Antiqui in XLIV" in 1720. Map primarily features Lower Egypt, shaded and outlined in pink hues. Provides detailed illustration of the many branches of the Nile delta, as they flow from interior of Africa, into the Mediterranean Sea. Annotations provided outside each of the Nile's mouth openings, within the Mediterranean. Neighboring region of Arabia shown. Ancient city of Alexandria included, located within the northwestern region of the country. To the south, notable cites such as Memphis and Nilopolis included. Small pyramids are generally illustrated within Memphis. Map includes decorative title cartouche located at bottom left, with set of images featuring sixteen medallions. Medallions link to ancient coinage history and culture relevant to "Aegyptus", the term referenced in title cartouche. Landforms, waterways, and features within region are located. Hachures depicted off coast(s). Single-paged, single-sided, horizontal map on laid paper. Centrefold as issued. Without binding. Verso is blank. 32 cm. x 41 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
