A map of the island of Madagascar embellished with a decorative title design, fanciful sea monsters, and a compass rose. Engraved by Girolamo Porro of Venice. Single paged, double sided. Map located above text on one side and reverse side includes indented text with design element and figural image/emblem below. Text side has modern pencil notes along bottom margin. Decorative with color. 10 cm. x 14 cm. From Tomaso Porcacchi's book "L'Isole piu famose del Mondo" (Venice, 1686; first published there in 1572). [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
