Description
This miniature map of Africa is a much simplified version of Abraham Ortelius' folio map of Africa with several geographic features omitted. The most important change is the lack of the smaller of the two Ptolemaic source lakes for the Nile, which apparently was derived from Joao de Barros' description of Central Africa. The map is adorned with quaint little ships and a sea monster. There is Italian text on the verso. Ortelius' atlas "Theatrum Orbis Terrarum," which first appeared in Antwerp in 1570, was so successful that Ortelius and his publisher Philip Galle first published a miniature or pocket-size version of the atlas there in 1577. In Italy, Pietro Maria Marchetti of Brescia soon produced a plagiarized version in 1598 which was closely copied on Galle's 1593 Italian-language edition. Marchetti's atlas is often referred to as "the plagiarized version of the Epitome." In turn, Marchetti's pocket atlas appeared in Venice in many later editions from 1655 until 1697. This map comes from a Venetian edition dating from 1667. Double sided, single paged. Miniature map. Vibrantly colored impression.
