Description
The Red River Shootout game between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas is being held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The rivalry began in 1900 and has been running since. The 1941 contest is all Longhorns despite an injury to their quarterback Pete Layden. R. L. Harkins came into the game in the third quarter, replacing the injured quarterback. Harkins faked to fullback Jack Crain, 44, before throwing an eighteen yard touchdown pass to end Noble Doss, 11. Doss out-maneuvered Sooner defender Jack Jacobs (27) before fielding the throw and scoring the Longhorn's fifth touchdown. Harkins is show at the far left, being swarmed by three late-arriving Sooner defenders. The Longhorns went on to win the game 40-7. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, October 13, 1941.
