Description

The Paschal High School football team is preparing for the home opener against Electra High School at Farrington Field. The experienced Panther team is looking to improve on the 1940 season. Posing on the field in their practice uniforms, left to right, on the top row are Leonard Moreland and Horace Richardson. On the bottom row are Jack Avinger, C. M. Grubbs and James Moore. Moreland is a 177-pound tackle. Richardson is an End. Avinger, a 140-pound letterman, is the back-up fullback. Despite the back-up status, the smart athlete will see much service. Grubbs is a 155-pound swift halfback. Moore is another candidate for the Panther backfield. Five young men wearing soiled knit football jerseys and sewn leather helmets. In the background is a fence and what looks like a private home next to the practice field. Numbers 38, 72, and 22 are stenciled onto individual shirts; Moreland's shirt doesn't have a visible number and Moore's shirt has a hand-lettered "6" on the chest. "Experienced Paschal Team Shoots for Improved Season. By William King, Star-Telegram Sports Writer. When all the battling for places on the Paschal football team is over the huge South Side school is going to have an improvement over its weak 1940 outfit." Published Star-Telegram Morn Sep 8, 1941.
