    Vernon Baird, the former master sergeant in Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Forces (SHAEF) in Europe in the oil and transportation section, was back in Fort Worth, after 21-day voyage from Antwerp to New York in a North Atlantic gale. Baird, son of Mr. and Mrs. Hoyt Baird, was graduated from Paschal High in 1937 and from Rice Institute in 1942. , before enlisting in the Army as a private. He was sent to England in October 1943, and moved across to France in July 1944. After the end of the war, Baird was transferred to Frankfurt-am-Main when SHAEF was reorganize and became United States Forces in the European Theater. Promoted to master sergeant, he became chief clerk in the G-4 section and was billeted in the former Hitler SS barracks, near the huge I. G. Farbenindustrie building. Baird had one week's leave for a visit to Nice, on the Cote d'Azur of southern France, and another week's stay in Switzerland before he started home in December. He was discharged at Camp Fannin, Tyler. In this picture, he is wearing suits and standing against the wall. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, January 26, 1946.
