Description
The only license plate of its kind in the world drew attention of State Highway Patrolman Dee Halyard, left, and Herman Seale, both of the Abilene, Texas, office, when General Jonathan M. Wainwright's car stopped in Weatherford, Texas. The plate, given to the general by Governor Walgren of Washington, has the Victory over Japan Day (V-J Day) letters, and the numbers form the date of the Japanese capitulation. The general's initials are at the right. The car was given to the general by citizens of his home town, Walla Walla, Washington. Halyard is standing and Seale is kneeling on the ground beside him, both looking at the car. They are wearing leather jackets, collared shirts, neckties, trousers and hats. The license plate reads "VJ 8-14-45" with the initials "JMW" arranged vertically on the right. There are other cars parked beside the general's. A storefront can be seen in the background for "Weatherford Texas Fruit & Dairy Center."
