After 27 months of service as an Army nurse in the Southwest Pacific, Lieutenant Mary L. Mayes is back in the United States, where she will be a patient at McCloskey General Hospital in Temple, Texas.. She is visiting Mrs. Mildred M. Lee while en route to see her mother, Mrs. Alice Mayes. Lieutenant Mayes enlisted in the Army in 1942 immediately after graduating from the City-County School of Nursing. In the Philippines, Mayes was in charge of the orthopedic ward of a hospital treating battle casualties. She is standing against a bare wall, wearing her military uniform and carrying a messenger bag.
