    Description

When Ensign Winthrop R. Hanawalt's Helldiver was hit by machine gun fire over the Inland Sea, he was held for ransom by the crew. The ransom, which was paid by the carrier to which he was attached, was 25 gallons of ice cream. Hanawalt won his wings at Corpus Christi. Hanawalt is shown sitting on a sofa and he is wearing his military uniform. Published in The Fort Worth Star-Telegram Morning Edition July 31, 1945
