Lieutenant Howard R. Hammett, 27-year-old wingman of the Army's leading ace, Major Bong, and holder of the Silver Star, two Distinguished Flying Crosses, the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters and the Purple Heart. A veteran of five years Army service, the P-38 pilot is visiting his wife, Mrs. Dorothy L. Hammett, while on a 32-day leave from Brooke General Hospital. Lieutenant Hammett is the son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Hammett of Tulsa, Oklahoma. He is standing against a wall, wearing a military uniform.
