Clipping: "Awards Go to Six Students. The outstanding students of J. P. Elder Junior High School, elected by the faculty and student body, were presented awards in a recent program in the school auditorium. Judge Atwood McDonald presented the American Legion Award to Latryl Latyon, 2215 Columbus, and Brown Tomme Jr., 2508 Honeysuckle. The Danforth Foundation Award was won by Helen Duffey, 1201 Glenwick Dr., and Benedict Nieswiadomy, 2304 Clinton. The J. P. Elder Merit Awards winners were Martha Reid, 1511 Denver, and Harry Byars, 1509 Grand. Mrs. Blanc D. Doyle, student council sponsor, presented the certificates. All awards were based upon scholarship, honor, leadership and service. Doris Coonrod, student body president, presided over the program and the principal, R. G. Wilkerson, introduced the speakers." The winners (left to right) are: Harry Byars, Benedict Nieswiadomy, and Brown Tomme Jr. There is an unidentified boy next to Brown wearing an ROTC uniform and unidentified girls watching from the left. Harry is a winner of the J. P. Elder Merit Award and is wearing a short-sleeve woven patterned shirt and light trousers, and is wearing eyeglasses. Benedict received the Danforth Foundation Award and is dressed in a plain light short-sleeve shirt and dark pinstriped trousers. Brown won the American Legion Award and is dressed in his ROTC uniform with insignia and a chain and whistle attached to his shirt. The girls who won the three awards are standing in the background.
