Clipping: "Awards Go to Six Students. The outstanding students of J. P. Elder Junior High School, elected by the faculty and student body, were presented awards in a recent program in the school auditorium. Judge Atwood McDonald presented the American Legion Award to Latryl Latyon, 2215 Columbus, and Brown Tomme Jr., 2508 Honeysuckle. The Danforth Foundation Award was won by Helen Duffey, 1201 Glenwick Dr., and Benedict Nieswiadomy, 2304 Clinton. The J. P. Elder Merit Awards winners were Martha Reid, 1511 Denver, and Harry Byars, 1509 Grand. Mrs. Blanc D. Doyle, student council sponsor, presented the certificates. All awards were based upon scholarship, honor, leadership and service. Doris Coonrod, student body president, presided over the program and the principal, R. Gl. Wilkerson, introduced the speakers." Published Star-Telegram Eve. May 16, 1945. The winners left to right are: Latryl Layton, Helen Duffey, Martha Reid, There is an unidentified woman standing between Helen and Martha. Latryl received the American Legion Award and is wearing a light blouse trimmed with eyelet at the neck and short puff sleeves and threaded with ribbon, striped skirt gathered at the waist, a bracelet and ring and a booster pin on her blouse, and ribbons in her hair. Helen received the Danforth Foundation Award and is is wearing a light pleated trimmed blouse with ruffles and puff sleeves, tucked into a light colored A-line skirt, and has eyeglasses and bows in her hair. Martha won the J. P. Elder Merit Awardand is dressed in a light embroidered blouse gathered at the neck and short sleeves by ribbons, and a floral skirt. The boys who won the three awards are standing in the background. The unidentified woman is wearing a light long-sleeved blouse with ruffles and a dark A-line skirt. She has on earrings.
