Description
First Lieutenant (Lt.) R. L. Skaggs, Ranger, Texas is pictured here. He is dressed in uniform. He is the son of Mrs. Lucy Skaggs. Lieutenant (Lt.) SKaggs, who was missing in action more than eight months after his Flying Fortress was shot down Jan. 29, 1944, is now a pilot at Laredo Army Air Field. His wife, the former Miss Peggy Louise Ashburn of Denison, whom he married last Jan. 13, is with him at the border city. Skaggs suffered a knee injury and a frost bite on his face during the ill-fated fight, his eighth mission. He holds a Purple Heart, Air Medal and Distinguished Unit Badge. The plane on which he served as co-pilot was disabled by enemy fighters after bombing Frankfurt Germany. In a 45 minute battle, during which six German planes were downed, the Fortress became so disabled that the crew abandoned it at 18,000 feet above Belgium. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, March 5, 1945.
