First Lieutenant (Lt.) Bruce W. Smith, navigator-bombardier on the Flying Flossie, a plane made in Fort Worth, Texas, is pictured here. He wears the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC), the Air Medal with three clusters, the European campaign ribbon, and the Presidential citation ribbon. He is shown standing against a bare wall, wearing his military uniform and all of his decorations on the jacket. Lieutenant (Lt.) Smith is a veteran of 59 missions over enemy territory in Europe. He entered the service in May 1942. He was a junior in the University of Missouri School of Journalism when he joined the Air Forces. Born and reared in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the 21- year-old young lieutenant (Lt.) completed high school in that city. He is home for a rest. But he is waiting for another assignment and anxious to do what he can to end the war in victory. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, February 5, 1945.
