Description

Lieutenant (Junior Grade) Boaz E. Hoskins and wife (Elsie Gay Cayton) and daughter Gay Hoskins. A woman sitting on a chair holding her daughter on the arm of the chair while her husband sits on the other arm of the chair. "Daddy's Picture Comes to Life for Baby Gay Hoskins--Convincing 13-month-old Gay Hoskins that the picture she has always known as 'Dad' has come to life is the primary goal of Lt. (jg) Boaz E. Hoskins, who has just returned from 18 months' duty as a submarine squadron commander in the Central Pacific and is getting acquainted with his daughter for the first time. 'Baby English' is proving the chief stumbling block, and Mrs. Hoskins, the former Elise Gay Cayton, is being called on the serve as interpreter. It took two attempts for Lieutenant Hoskins to get home last week, but, even so, he arrived before the cable telling of his leave. The first plane which he boarded at Pearl Harbor had engine trouble 850 miles out and they were forced to turn back. 'Those were the most disappointing moments of my life,' he says. Among the bases at which Hoskins has been stationed are the Marshall Islands and Midway. Work done by his group includes picking up fliers who have been hit in raids on Jap bases. One sub in his squadron has rescued 17 who were forced down. On occasion, Jap survivors are also brought aboard, and the two such that he has seen were 'apparently happy about the whole thing, saluting everybody from seamen second class on up.' Speaking with admiration of the men who serve on the submarines, he says, 'Those war patrols are tough, and everybody has to be working at peak efficiency for each has a vital job to perform. They are individualistic, confident, and self-reliant and you won't find men anywhere that are prouder of their branch of the service. Hoskins, former director of training at Montgomery Ward & Company here, entered service in December, 1942. He attended Central (now Paschal) High School and was graduated from TCU in 1935. The family lives at 4217 Lovell. His mother, Mrs. Bena Hoskins, is director of public school cafeterias here and his father, E. E. Hoskins, works for the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad."
