    Description

    Lieutenant Colonel Charles M. Smith, whose wife, Mrs. Stella Smith, and son, Charles Michael Jr., live in San Antonio, has been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) with cluster for participation in the invasion of Normandy as pilot and flight leader in the 9th Air Force troop carrier group. Smith led his group over Normandy with paratroopers and glider-borne infantry the night of June 5 and returned during the daylight house of June 6 and 7 with ammunition and supplies for the airborne troops. Smith wears his uniform in the photograph. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, September 12, 1944.
