    Description

    Private First Class Henry Allen Shires, Denison, Texas, son of Henry E. Shires, has been awarded the Silver star for gallantry in action on Saipan Island with an Army infantry division. He left his covered position to storm a Japanese pillbox 20 yards away that was being covered by a Jap rifleman from the flank and was able to thrust his bayonet through the roof before returning fire. Shires is in military uniform in the portrait photograph. Shires was a former taxi driver. His sister, Mrs. Edna Simmons resides in Fort Worth. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, September 8, 1944.
