"Fighter With 4 Battle Stars Is Visiting Parents Here. Pvt. Harwood Johnson, 22, who wears four battle stars on his theater ribbons, is in Fort Worth for his first visit home since he joined the Army in 1939. It is the first time Johnson has seen his parents, Maj. W. T. Johnson, commanding officer of the Salvation Army here, and Mrs. Johnson, since he enlisted in Amarillo. But he bumped into his brother, James Johnson, 20, a former private first class in the USMC, on Guadalcanal. James Johnson was in the 2nd Marine Division from which he has recently been medically discharged due to wounds received at Tarawa. He is now residing with his parents at 920 Conner. Private Johnson is a radio operator. He wears an American Defense ribbon with a battle star for fighting against the Jap[anese] attack at Pearl Harbor. He was in Schofield Barracks, where heavy damage was done, when the enemy raided. He has participated in three major battles in the Solomon [Islands] and New Georgia Islands. He will be here on furlough until Aug. 21 when he reports for reassignment." Published Star-Telegram Morn. Aug. 11, 1944. Private Johnson is in front of the photo wall at the Star-Telegram office, wearing his military uniform and standing in an at ease position. His theater ribbon is over his left breast pocket and his tie is tucked into the front of his uniform shirt. He is wearing a service cap with the military insignia on the front.
