Description
After years as wife and mother, university professor, clubwoman and secretary to a governor and a senator, Sergeant Emma M. Shirley has climaxed her career by joining the Women's Army Corps (WAC). Originally from Waco, she's the daughter of Mrs. M. Morrill. Her husband Mr. N. A. Shirley, lives in Austin at present. Her son-in-law, Lieutenant Tipton O. Tate Junior, was killed in action thus furnishing her "with one of the prime reasons for joining the WAC." Sergeant Shirley holds the B. A. degree from Baylor University and an M. A. in government from the University of Texas. A noted Texas clubwoman, she is a member of the DAR, DRT, the Altrusa Club, the Austin B&PW Club, the American Association of University Women, the American Association of University Professors and the National Association of Teachers of Business Writing. She has several other accomplishments to her name. She is currently living in a large, old-fashioned comfortable apartment in the home of Mrs. Charles W. Lewis. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, evening edition, July 28, 1944.
