Description
Brother of Mrs. P. E. Porterfield of 3544 Baldwin, Leininger is in Fort Worth for his first leave in the United States in 14 months. Leininger wears the submarine combat pin, a miniature submarine on which are three stars for as many major engagements. He was graduated from Lubbock High School in 1934, worked two years in a drug store there, then enlisted in the Navy in 1936. After four years of duty on surface ships, he attended the Navy's ice machine and air-conditioning school at York, Pennsylvania, and elected to take an assignment of submarine duty. It's his job to keep the auxiliary engines in working trim to run the air-conditioning and refrigeration machinery. On an 89-day voyage from Australia, he saw the sun only once. He expects to visit his mother, Mrs. Ida Leininger of Long Beach, California before returning to sea duty. Leininger is shown in his uniform sitting comfortably in a large upholstered chair. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, June 9, 1944.
