Description
Private First Class Joe Ed Howard is a Marine machine gunner. The 23-year-old was wounded in November at Tarawa. He is home in Fort Worth, Texas, on a furlough to visit his sister, Mrs. V. A. Wise. Private Howard wears the Purple Heart and still carries two pieces of the five-inch shell in his hip. He served overseas 13 months before being shot. Private Howard is standing against a wall, dressed in his military uniform.
