Description
This is Karl von Spruner's 1855 map of Africa since the beginning of the 15th century. There are two insets on left side, 'The Colonies of the Gold Coast,' and 'Al Magreb' (northwest Africa) after Leo Africanus. Cartouche located on bottom right and color coded key located in upper left corner. Map has little to no accompanying imagery. Spruner was a German, Moorish diplomat and author best known for his book "Descrittione dell'Africa," (Description of Africa) describing the geography of North Africa. Relief is shown by hachures and historical dates appear throughout. Plate #13. Single paged and single sided with original centerfold in the middle. Uncolored map image with colored boundaries indicating colonial power holdings. 33 cm. x 38 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
