Description
Girolamo Ruscelli's "modern" or updated map of Egypt from his 1561 edition of second-century Greek geographer Claudius Ptolemy's geography shows the lower Nile River and Nile delta regions as well as the area of the northern Red Sea. Cities featured among the fine details include "Alessandria" (Alexandria), "Cayro" (Cairo), and "Damiata" (Damietta). Ruscelli's work was an expanded edition of fellow Venetian Giacomo Gastaldi's 1548 edition Ptolemy's geography. Printed from a copper plate. Horizontal map. Double paged, double sided with binding on back. Latin text on one side and map on reverse. 22 cm. x 29 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
