Description
An early Münster wood cut view of the Ottoman-controlled city of Algiers, depicting its attempted storming by forces under Holy Roman Emperor Charles V in 1541. Sebastian Münster (1488-1552), was a famous German cartographer, cosmographer, and a Christian Hebraist scholar. From a Latin edition of Münster's "Cosmographia," first published in German in 1544. Münster's work was the earliest German description of the world. It had numerous editions in different languages, and was one of the most successful and popular works of the 16th century. Double-sided, single paged, full text on one side, half text and uncolored map on reverse. Page numbers included. Latin text. Woodcut on paper. 19 cm. x 15 cm. [Gift of Dr. Jack Franke]
