Description

Whiskered Gent Visits Rehabilitation Center Residents of New Liberty Mission Rehabilitation Center near Lake Worth were recognized Sunday as "friends in a neighboring community" at a Christmas party in their honor, sponsored at the center by Lake Worth Chamber of Commerce. J. L. Blackwell, president of the Lake Worth chamber spoke at the party. Most of the center's residents have been picked up on downtown streets and are paroled to the center from the city jail. After Blackwell's speech and several Christmas carols, Santa Claus rushed in the front door of the chapel as a choir sang "Jingle Bells." Santa was portrayed by Jerry Starnes, owner of Casino Beach. Choir members, attired in blue robes, were from Lake Worth Methodist Church. After each resident received his present, one gift remained under the lighted Christmas tree in the corner of the chapel. Santa discovered it was for Henry F. Cooper, superintendent of the center. Before the Santa party, the weekly Sunday afternoon church service was held in the chapel. Rev. Cecil L. Gammill, pastor of River Oaks Baptist Church, was in charge of the service.
