Description

237 Million Passenger Miles: Bomb Wing Accident-Free 5 Years Carswell Air Force Base's 7th Bombardment Wing (heavy) marked a perfect five-year air safety record Thursday afternoon as a huge B-52 bomber touched down at the base after a routine training mission. The landing was the first made going into the sixth year of air safety. The wing had chalked up 237,000,000 passenger miles since its last accident. "We couldn't have driven an automobile that long without an accident," said Colonel John A. Roberts, wing commander. "Of all our accomplishments since World War II, this is the record for which I am most proud." Major J. M. Walker was commander of the B-52 which marked the anniversary. He was congratulated by base officials, including Major L. N. Walker, wing safety officer, and Colonel William Jones, squadron commander. The wing's last accident occured at 3:37 P. M., December 11, 1953, when a B-36 plowed into a mountain while attempting a landing at Biggs Air Force Base at El Paso. Since that time the wing has had no accidentmajor or minor. Crews have flown 64,000 accident-free flying in the five years, including nearly 6,000 hours in jet bombers. That amounts to about 574 trips around the world. "It's a safety record that could make some airlines envious," a spokesman said.
