Description

The Red River Shootout game between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas is being held at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, Texas. The rivalry began in 1900 and has been running since. The 1941 contest is all Longhorns, beginning with this play on the opening drive. Fullback Jack Crain, 44, is shown running downfield and dropping behind the Sooner defense. Pete Layden (not pictured) spotted the open back and threw a deep pass downfield. Crain caught the pass in the end-zone for the first score of the game. Also pictured is Longhorn Preston Flanagan, 87, and Sooner Orville Mathews, 35. The Longhorns went on to win 40-7. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, October 13, 1941.
