The Masonic Home High School football team is trying for their fourth straight district 7-AA Championship. Pictured, left to right, are Billy Joe Cagle, Louis Burress, and Jake Conner. Cagle and Burress, little rascals from the 1940 season, have grown into the husky, talented Masons backfield. Cagle (36) is a wing back. Burress (38) is a tailback. Jake Conner (21) is one of the youngsters on the team. Three clippings accompany the photo, each boy featured on a different day. For Louis Burress, it compares him as a local boy from Masonic Home who is a rival to "Marion Flanagan, Sweetwater's versatile halfback, [who] rested last week. And while he was idle a number of athletes gained considerable ground on him in the West and Central Texas schoolboy football scoring race. . . . Four other players with excellent chances of overtaking Flanagan are Buryl Baty, Paris' great passer and placement kicker; long-legged Louis Burress of Masonic Home. . . ." Published Star-Telegram Morn. Oct. 8, 1941. Billy Joe Cagle's photo also discusses competition with Marion Flanagan and other Texas players but the truncated clipping doesn't discuss Cagle. Published Star-Telegram Morn. Sep 17, 1941. The third truncated clipping header starts "Conner, Burress R. . . " and the clipping again doesn't contain the discussion of the young man featured in the photo. It isn't stamped with the publication date, but it may be Oct. 27, 1941, based upon the by-line on an article on the back of the clipping.
