Description
Old Kate, a mule, had a hand in the spudding of an oil rig at the Texas Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association convention. Mules had a role to play in the spudding as early rotary oil rigs were rotated with the aid of a mule. attendees (left to right) J. P. Shannon, J. G. Hamill, Fort Worth, Texas; A. W. Hamill, Tulsa, Oklahoma; William M. Elliott, Corsicana, Texas; Ed Ritterbacher, vice president of the american Well and Prospecting Company, owner of the rig, and Frank Pickrell, who is credited with the opening of the Permian Basin area with the discovery of the Big Lake pool in Reagan County, one of West Texas' leading fields, and Old Kate.
