    Description

Thousands of civilians flocked to Camp Bowie and Camp Wolters to catch a glimpse of what the country is doing in way of national defense. Marching troops, social life, and field maneuvers made it a full day for the men in uniform and the visitors. Pictured left to right are Betty Jane Birkhead, Mrs. Claude V. Birkhead, and Mary Ann Birkhead. They are the family of Camp Bowie commander, Major General Claude V. Birkhead. Betty Jane, seventeen, is wearing a hat, dress, and a coat tied at the waist. Mrs. Birkhead is wearing a hat, dress, and a dark coat. Mary Ann, sixteen, is wearing a floral dress with a matching hat and a coat. They are strolling down the streets of Brownwood, Texas with linked arms. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, morning edition, April 8, 1941.
