The first day of school at Alexander Hogg Elementary School is opening with a scene that is probably typical across Fort Worth, Texas. Left to right are, Donald Leach, Billie Ruth Valentine, and Miss Beulah Johnson. Donald is trying the old-fashioned custom of bringing his new teacher a shiny red apple. Billie Ruth is trying a different approach. Her friendship offering is a bouquet of daisies. Miss Johnson is standing on the front steps of the school, accepting the generous gifts. Donald, ten, is dressed in a short-sleeve collared shirt and trousers. He is carrying a stack of books. Billie Ruth, eleven, is wearing a gingham dress. Miss Johnson is wearing a paisley dress with an American Flag pin. She is holding a small school bell.
