Description

A calm, soft-spoken little woman whose brown hair is turning to silver is "mother" to 230 children of the Lena Pope Home, for which as expansion program on a 10-block area in Arlington Heights is in the making. She is Mrs. Lena Holston Pope, who has shared the love and affection of a mother with more than 5,000 children since her own first-born, Conrad Pope died at the age of seven in 1914. In this picture is Mrs. Lena Pope with Weldon Huber, fourteen months, one of the little tots in the home's "Babyland" cottage. Mrs. Pope places her left hand on Huber's knee and uses her body to support him while he is seated on a wooden railing. Huber is holding a little dog doll and he is wearing an overall with snickers while Mrs. Pope is wearing a suit with a flowery bow on her neck and glasses. Mrs. Pope is standing and smiling at Huber while he does the same. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, March 19, 1947.
