Description

A calm, soft-spoken little woman whose brown hair is turning to silver is "mother" to 230 children of the Lena Pope Home, for which as expansion program on a 10-block area in Arlington Heights is in the making. She is Mrs. Lena Holston Pope, who has shared the love and affection of a mother with more than 5,000 children since her own first-born, Conrad Pope died at the age of seven in 1914. In this picture is Mrs. Pope sitting on the stairway with some of the residents of the Lena Pope Home. To the right of the picture, there is man wearing a suit standing on a stool holding a lamp in his hand trying to give the picture brightness. Mrs pope is seated in the center at the first few steps going up. There are male and female children and teenagers surrounding her at the front, behind, and beside her. Most of the girls are wearing dresses and the boys are wearing shirts and pants. Some of the children in the picture are smiling at the camera, some have straight faces and others are distracted. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram evening edition, March 19, 1947.
