Description
This picture shows some of the estimated 500 shade trees which must be uprooted in the widening and repaving of Hemphill Street from Magnolia Avenue to Biddison Street. Protests over the possible loss of the trees were being planned by a group of property owners headed by C. T. Hodge. City officials hope to save the trees by incorporating a transplanting program in a Works Progress Administration (WPA) project for building sidewalks. The curbs are to be set back and the pavement widened from 40 to 54 feet.
