Description

Ill fares the land when unchecked erosion eats deep gullies into the uplands and washes down sediment to smother agriculture in the valleys. That is what has happened in Wise and Montague Counties, and parts of Jack, Parker, and Tarrant Counties, drainage areas of the upper Trinity River. A victim of erosion is this pecan tree. The poor tree is ready to topple into a gully at the next hard rain. It also is suffering from the strangling action of sand that has washed into the valley to a depth greater than the height of Mack McConnell, district soil conservationist, shown standing by the tree.
