Description
Colonel Max H. Gooler, from Devil's Lake, North Dakota, was the first American Ground Forces officer captured by the Germans in World War II, and may have been the first American prisoners in the Mediterranean theater. Col. Gooler was captured at Tobruk, in Libya on June 21, 1942, and spent two years and nine months in prisoner of war camps - with the exception of 27 days of freedom that he gained in three escapes. Colonel Gooler in a military uniform is standing with one hand behind his back and the other one in front of him holding a pipe. Star-Telegram Evening Edition February 11, 1946
