Description
Staff Sergeant Jack H. Calvert, 22 is pictured here. He is shown standing against a bare wall, facing front, dressed in uniform and smiling for the camera. He, former Lubbock resident, was a waist gunner on a battle-scarred B-17 Flying Fortress on October 14, 1943. A horde of German fighters swooped down upon the plane as it roared toward Schweinfurt, Germany. Staff Sergeant Calvert was injured, his parachute fluttered to earth and he dashed into the woods. Three nights he wandered aimlessly, got food from German fields. On the fourth night he found a railroad. After eight days deep inside the Nazi homeland in an effort to reach France, he was rescued by nine American Rangers who freed 16, 000 Allied prisoners of war. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, June 28, 1945.
