Description
Sailor Frank Ligon Junior is a crew member on the USS Sangamon. He is on leave in Fort Worth, Texas, while his ship is being repaired in Norfolk, Virginia. The Sangamon was severely damaged when a Japanese plane struck the ship. Thirty-five of the 900 man crew were lost in the attack. Mr. Ligon was on the catwalk when the bomb exploded and pierced the flight deck. He and the other crew members fought fires on the ship for several hours while sailing back to the United States. Ligon, who enlisted in the Navy in May of 1944, is on Survivor's Leave before returning to duty. He is sitting on a couch, dressed in his military uniform.
