    Description

    Lieutenant John C. Gravitt of Levelland, Texas, was killed in action on September 28, 1944. He was leading his platoon at Peleliu, providing cover fire when he was fatally wounded. Lieutenant Gravitt has been posthumously awarded the Navy Cross and the Purple Heart. The awards will be presented to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Omer T. Gravitt. Lieutenant Gravitt enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in 1938. As a civilian, he was a professional baseball player for the St. Louis Browns. Lieutenant Gravitt is shown in his official military photograph, dressed in his uniform.
