Description
Sergeant S. L. Nichols, a prisoner of war, returned home to his wife and met his nineteen-month-old son, Stephen Lynn for the first time. For nearly a year, Sergeant Nichols' daily fare was a gummy loaf. He brought home a loaf to show his family. It weighs three and a half pounds and is made of sawdust and potato flour. On close examination, one may notice the shreds of wood. Sergeant Nichols is sitting on the couch, dressed in his military uniform.
