Captain Jeff Coats, left, and Captain John Donley sitting together in uniform. Coats holds the Combat Infantryman's Badge and wears stars for three major campaigns on his ETO ribbon. He is a son of Mrs. Maydell Pippin of Jacksboro. He entered service in May 1941. He enlisted in the National Guard in 1935, but went in as an officer after receiving a commission in Reserve Officers' Training Corps at the University of Arkansas. Donley wears stars for the same campaigns. He also has the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, for meritorious service at Brest, and the American Defense Ribbon. He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. F. E. Donley of 4036 Birchman, had been hit by tank fire east of the river. He suffered a broken left leg and foot and shrapnel lacerations in both legs. He entered service when the National Guard was mobilized in November 1940. He later went to Army Officer Candidate School at Fort Benning, Georgia where he received his commission in May 1942. Donley is a 1938 graduate of Arlington Heights High School. He served as Star-Telegram carrier salesman while a student there and at Texas Christian University, where he studied a year before entering service. He met Coats when he joined the 6th Armored Division at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas, that same month. They went overseas in February 1944.
