Description
Portrait of Sergeant Jones, 24, in uniform, whose quick thinking saved the lives of three buddies in the Battle for Leyte. He has received the Purple Heart, Asiatic Ribbon with three battle stars, Philippine Ribbon with the Arrow Cluster, and the Combat Infantryman's Badge. Jones was inducted into the Army on January 9, 1942 and left for duty in the Pacific on April 22, 1942. He returned to the United States on January 25, 1945, after having served with the 128th Regiment of the 32nd Infantry Division in the Buna, Saidor, Aitape and Leyte campaigns. He was wounded in the stomach while fighting at Aitape. Complications set in while he was fighting on Leyte which resulted in two operations while in the hospital in Denver. The platoon in which Jones was a squad leader was the first American Army unit to set foot on enemy territory in New Guinea. Jones graduated from Polytechnic High School in 1937 and was employed as a maintenance foreman by the State Highway Department prior to entering the Army. In this picture, he is sitting on a sofa with his hands folded. Published in Fort Worth Star-Telegram, morning edition, April 12, 1945.
