Description
This is a portrait of Sergeant Warren H. Raymond in his military uniform. He held the Purple Heart for wounds suffered in action last July 21 on Guam and died March 2 of wounds received on Iwo Jima, according to an official notice to his widow, Mrs. Louise Raymond. He was the son of Mrs. Gertrude Raymond. Sergeant Raymond is a member of the 3rd Marine Division. He was hit by shell fragments during an intense Japanese barrage on Guam, during his commanding officer was shot. Refusing immediate medical aid, Raymond took over the platoon and continued the engagement. He was cited for outstanding service. Overseas two years, he had participated in the Bougainville campaign before the invasion of the Marianas. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, April 8, 1945.
