Description
Raymond Callaway, 20 year-old sailor, Soundman Second Class, was a survivor of the minesweeper USS Hovey, sunk January 7, 1945. After his ship was torpedoed he sustained oil burns and was in the water an hour and a half before being picked up by another ship in his squadron. The USS Hovey was credited with sweeping more Japanese mines than any other U.S. ship. Callaway married Miss Jo Broadstreet of Amarillo in a double wedding ceremony with shipmate Melton Overall of Dallas. Callaway and bride will be at the home of his mother, Mrs. Violet Chrisman, until March 22 when he reports to Dallas for reassignment. Callaway is shown in his uniform standing by a blank wall, hands on hips and smiling. Published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram morning edition, March 4, 1945.
